Happy New Year! we've just arrived at our hotel in manchester, england to begin our tour of europe, which begins tomorrow night in manchester. we're really excited to be over here. this is our european tour that was supposed to happen in october, but was postponed due to the events on september 11th. our record has been doing very well in europe and we'll be playing to alot of people who have never seen us before. we spent the past few days in atlanta putting together a show that we're really excited about, so let the games begin! and besides touring europe...this coming tuesday we get to work in the legendary abbey road studios to record a song for an upcoming mel gibson movie compilation cd. don't think we're not excited about that! it's a really cool song, too. well...we haven't exactly "written" it yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar (whatever that means) that it's going to be cool as hell!
anyway, we ended 2001 on a good note with two very fun shows at the house of blues in chicago. thanks to our friends better than ezra, glen phillips and bleu for joining us and making both nights that much more special. we debuted a new cover song, "come together" by the beatles, which kevin (better than ezra) and glen joined in on new years eve. we played it better the next night, though. it seemed to go over well, so we'll probably try it out some more in europe. we may even slip in the new song that we haven't written yet! it's gonna be good, though. don't you worry.
oh yeah...and the grammy's! we're pretty excited about that, too. it's a real honor to be nominated in the catagories that we're nominated in (best song, best rock song, best record, best performance and best string arrangement) with such great artists. U2 will probably win them all, but we're thinking that maybe we can sit next to them during the ceremony and get them really drunk and maybe they'll give us some. we hear they're pretty nice like that.
what else...
did you know that we'll be performing at the olympics in salt lake city on february 17th? yep.
ok. we've gotta go for now. we've got a song to write! right after we go to the movies to see "lord of the rings".
cheers,
pat, rob, jimmy, scott and charlie
Thursday, December 27th
we hope everybody had a nice christmas! we've been at home on a break since wrapping up our string of radio concerts on december 18th in seattle. that was a fun night. we hung out with our friends in lifehouse, barenaked ladies and michelle branch. it was a great crowd that night, too.
anyway, we just wanted to drop a quick note to wish everybody a happy new year and a safe one, too. we'll be heading to chicago for two shows on new years eve and the night after. we're really looking forward to it. we're not sure if any tickets are left, but you might want to check on that one if you haven't got tickets yet. after that we'll be back home until the 10th of january when we head overseas to begin our european tour.
happy new year, everybody! we'll be looking forward to seeing you all in 2002...

Wednesday, December 12th
we're in new york city today. it was supposed to be a "day off", but we decided to do a photo shoot (which lasted all afternoon outdoors in the cold) and did an evening interview with the nice people at much music in canada. tomorrow we play an exclusive radio show for a small crowd of contest winners before hitting the road for charlotte. we also get to view the first cut of our new "she's on fire" video tomorrow morning.
so, anyway...last night we played in detroit and the night before we were in atlanta where charlie was dragged out onstage by natalie merchant during her set to dance with her. he was living proof that musicians really do become musicians because they can't dance! nah...he did fine. what else...did we ever tell you the story of when we were in australia one morning a few weeks ago and were all awakened to the sound of pat calling for his imaginary dog? yep. he was out on his balcony yelling "douche-bag....here douche-bag!....come here, boy!....douuuuche-baaaag!". scott was the first to wander out onto his balcony in his robe and was overheard by jimmy saying, "hello?...what the f@#%!?" that pat.
we'll talk to you soon.

Monday, December 10
we're in atlanta today for a show tonight with smashmouth and natalie merchant. we're about five shows in to this run of U.S. christmas/radio shows. they've been alot of fun so far. the first was at the paradise club in boston, where we've played many times over the years. it was fun to go back to such a small venue and play. sonja dada opened the night and were great. we've been on some incredible bills this week. after boston we went to rochester and played with the calling, michelle branch and city high. the next night in baltimore we played with five for fighting, american hi-fi, the cranberries, better than ezra (who we'll see again on new years eve in chicago), and alanis morrisette. last night in D.C. was with five for fighting, the calling and the bare naked ladies. tomorrow in detroit we're with five for fighting, michelle branch, o'town, the cranberries, nelly furtado and jewel. pretty great line-ups! we're closing most of the shows (except last night - the bare naked ladies closed). it's been alot of fun.
anyway, we've gotta run. just wanted to drop a quick line and say hello. we'll look forward to seeing you all on the rest of this tour and then we're really excited about our chicago shows and heading to europe in january. talk to you soon.

Sunday, December 1st
we leave australia tomorrow afternoon after what has turned out to be a very successful and very enjoyable trip. our final show was in brisbane on friday night (which was actually thursday night in the U.S.). it was the final show at the legendary Festival Hall theatre where the Beatles performed in 1964 (ironically and sadly, george harrison died on the day of our show there....he'll be greatly missed by all of us), as well as Led Zeppelin and many other great bands. apparently, they're tearing the place down or turning it into a shopping mall or something like that. clare (from oz - the "bonnie" of australia) and her very nice friends were in attendance for all three australian concerts as well as one of the television tapings. they gave each of us gifts and were as cool as train fans come (we're very proud to say that we must have the absolute best fans in the entire world). we'll look forward to seeing them again when we return to the beautiful land down under.
so...we all got to bed around 1AM after the brisbane show and had to be in the hotel lobby at 4:30AM to fly to sydney to shoot our "she's on fire" video yesterday. it was really rough...the waking up and the flying, that is...when we arrived at the site for the video shoot we were on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world somewhere about an hour north of sydney. we spent the day filming (and surfing and hanging out on the beach) in two gorgeous beach houses with 10 absolutely gorgeous model/surfer chics. sometimes this job just sucks! anyway, the video seems like it's going to be very fun and good looking (marc smerling, who directed the "something more" video, directed this one as well). we wrapped up at about midnight last night and slept in late today. pat has to shoot one last sunrise scene on the beach tomorrow morning before we all hop on our flight back the U.S., where we'll have one day off at home before heading to boston to begin our short tour of american christmas shows.
keep an eye out for our DVD/VHS concert, which we've titled "Midnight Moon" to be released (just in time for christmas!) on december 18th.
we'll talk to you soon.

Friday, November 30th
we're in sydney this morning. we've had two really successful shows here in australia so far. last night in sydney (where we opened the show with "it's love" and played a spontaneous version of "sharks" - both songs being on the australian "drops of jupiter" single) and the night before in melbourne. the crowds have been really great. after last nights show we were presented with beautiful platinum awards for our album and our single by our record company here in australia. this morning we'll fly to brisbane for our final show down under tonight. tomorrow, very early in the morning, we'll fly back to sydney to shoot our next video for "she's on fire". we don't want to give away too much of the plot, but let's just say that we're shooting on the beach and in a beach house, there'll be lots of sand, some surfing, some fire, beautiful australian girls and five very handsome fellas.
we return to the states next week to perform 10 or 12 shows around the country. you should be able to find out information about these shows on our website or from pollstar. and for those of you in chicago, don't forget about our two shows coming up at the house of blues on new years' eve and january 1st. our support on new years' eve will be "better than ezra" and glen phillips (formerly of "toad the wet sprocket"). we're looking forward to that.
gotta go catch a flight. talk to you soon.

Wednesday, November 28th
we're in australia and it's wednesday morning here. we perform a concert tonight in melbourne, where we've spent the past few days doing television and press. yesterday we performed on "Rove live", which is australia's version of the "tonight show". it was a two hour special of the season finale. our song was featured as the song of the year. we performed with a 10 piece orchestra. after that, we headed to an old church and performed on the "cold live at the chapel" show, which is similar to MTV Unplugged. there was a very nice live audience and the performance was alot of fun. pat told stories about the songs and joked around with the crowd quite a bit. we played acoustic versions of "meet virginia", "she's on fire", "i wish you would", "drops of jupiter" and "ramble on". then we switched to electric and performed "hopeless", "something more" and "free".
tonight we perform at the beautiful palais theater in melbourne. tomorrow we fly to sydney for a show tomorrow night. the day after that we'll fly to brisbane for a show. and then we return to sydney on saturday (friday in the states) to shoot a video for "she's on fire". we'll tell you more about that later. we just wanted to drop you a quick line and say hello and let all of the australians know that we're here! it's summertime down under and we're really looking forward to these shows, so come on out and see us.
talk to you all soon.
pat, rob, jimmy, scott and charlie
p.s. hang tight on the fan club thing. we'll be making an announcement very soon. oh, and don't forget to vote for us on the VH1 website for the VH1 award show on December 2nd. unfortunately, we won't be able to attend the ceremony. we'll still be in australia shooting the video.
Tuesday, November 13th
we're still on a break from touring. we leave for australia next week and are really looking forward to it. we're planning to shoot a video for "She's On Fire" while we're there. we were in new york doing some european television shows last week. so many american bands have cancelled their european tours that the europeans decided to come to new york and tape some of their television programs. it worked out really well for everybody. there was a small audience of about 150 people who were there as part of the taping and we had a really good time with them. we flew to canada that afternoon to perform at the first ever canadian fannie awards (a new award show voted on by the fans). it was mainly for canadian artists, but we opened the show with "drops of jupiter" followed by "something more" and then presented an award for best female artist. it was fun. after the show we went out for a nice dinner with the canadian sony folks who presented us with canadian double platinum awards. thank you canada!
anyway, our new video is slowly climbing the VH1 charts. has everybody voted for us on the VH1 website? we're planning to fly home from canada in time to attend the award ceremony in los angeles on december 2nd.
ok. sorry for the short note, but we're on a very rare vacation. we'll write more soon.
take care

Wednesday, October 3rd
hi everyone. it's been awhile since we've written, so here we go...
we're on a two week break before our european tour begins. we finished the matchbox twenty tour saturday night in phoenix. it was a great tour for us. one of the top 10 most successful tours of the summer! the crowds were awesome and the matchbox twenty band and crew were great to tour with. we'll miss those guys. as a going away gift we got them a male stripper dressed as a cop to entertain them and the 17,000 people in the phoenix crowd during their set. they seemed to enjoy it. that stripper had a sack of yams or something in that g-string! we're not sure what was going on down there, but it was impressive.
we filmed a new video for "something more" while in phoenix. we were a little concerned with the contents of the original video, which was near completion, as most of it was shot in and around a skyscraper. out of respect for the september 11th tragedy and fear of not getting played we decided to shoot a new video. it might have been a blessing in disguise as we're all very excited about the new concept. hopefully it'll be finished and on your television screens in about three weeks. so, we filmed in phoenix on saturday (the day of the final matchbox twenty show), went to the venue and performed our set, watched the stripper do his thing and said our goodbyes to everyone, woke up at 5AM and continued shooting on sunday all day, woke up at 4AM monday and shot until 2 in the afternoon, rented a private jet and flew to bakersfield, california in time for a 5PM soundcheck and performed a headlining set at 8PM after which everybody flew or drove home for the break (is that too much information?). anyway, we got the job done and it feels good.
we performed on the tonight show for the second time this year while we were in LA last week. once again, jay leno was very kind to us and we had a wonderful time being there. we got to meet magic johnson who was there to make a cameo appearance. pat was invited to sing on a tribute song (marvin gaye's "what's goin' on") to raise money for the victims' families, so immediately after the tonight show taping he went to a recording studio to record his part. the song features the likes of n'sync, destiny's child, bono, michael stipe, mary j blige, nelly furtado, the backstreet boys and many others. he was also invited to be a part of the video, which will be filmed in new york this weekend.
in the last week our record went gold in england and double platinum in the U.S. and canada. thank you! we're looking forward to our trips to europe and australia (where our album is near double platinum). those will all be headlining dates, so get ready. rumor has it that our friends in Lifehouse will be supporting us in australia. we're very excited about that. but first we rest!
thank you again matchbox twenty! you guys and your fans are the best (after our fans, of course). and for those of you in the U.S. and canada who didn't get to see this tour or are ready to see us play as a headliner, look for a full-scale train tour to begin around february 2002.
signing out for now. everybody stay safe and be good to each other. we'll see you soon.
