Just north of London and made a city by Her Majesty the Queen in 2012 Chelmsford is well placed between London and England's east coast. It is something of a commuter and cultural haven, with quick connections into London, Norwich, Colchester, Ipswich, and Braintree. Chelmsford is regularly alive with festivals, including the new RiZe festival.  The city also provides a number of other festivals throughout the year including, CITYdiversions, a free weekend of international street theatre, and the Fling, the festival of assorted amusements.

The rivers Chelmer and Can flow through the town, passing the opulent Chelmsford Cathedral and bringing riverside charm to this bustling town.

Built in the 15th century, Chelmsford Cathedral underwent vast improvements during the 1800s and 1900s, and the chequered flint on its east end is one of the finest examples of such work, and the stained-glass windows may have recently been added, but they truly are a sight not to be missed. So why not take in a lunchtime recital at the cathedral before taking to the shops in the middle of the town centre. Visitors will find two major shopping malls with High Chelmer offering an abundance of well-known shops.

For a break from shopping with a slice of cafe culture - and cake - head to the High Street or the river. While at the river, consider a potter down the riverside walk-and-cycle route or a stroll through West Park, right next to the River Can.

While Chelmsford has a number of parks and woods that draw office workers and visitors on a wander throughout the year, a canal cruise on a barge along the Chelmer and Blackwater or trout fishing at Hanningfield Reservoir is that little something different. Also a little different is floodlit horse racing at Chelmsford City Racecourse, the newest racecourse in the country and one of only three lit at night.
