Scotland's fourth-largest city stands on the banks of the River Tay, and the waterfront was crucial to its growth as a centre for textiles, whaling, and shipbuilding in the 19th century. Today Dundee offers the visitor a vibrant culture and nightlife scene that is supported by the city's two universities. The city hosts a great range of events throughout the year, including the Food & Flower Festival in August and September, and the Mountain Film Festival in November.

Home to both the University of Dundee and the Abertay University, Dundee has a long history of science and research. It was here that the RSS Discovery was built for Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton's expedition to the Antarctic, and the ship is now a major visitor attraction at the city waterfront, just a short walk from the railway station.

Other science attractions include the Mills Observatory - Britain's only full-time public observatory - and the popular Dundee Science Centre. The two universities and the railway station form a large triangle around the city centre. Within it you'll find the pedestrianised shopping street of Murraygate, leading to the Wellgate shopping centre, and the Overgate Centre that surrounds the Steeple Church.

Nearby is the Cultural Quarter, home to the Dundee Rep Theatre, the Dundee Contemporary Arts centre, and many bars, pubs and restaurants. In the north of the city, football fans can take their pick on either side of the road as the city's two football grounds - Tannadice for Dundee United, and Dens Park for Dundee FC - stand within 160 metres of each other. The two very local rivals both play in the Scottish Premiership.
